String Arranging Course

From idea to finished recording

A practical and creative course for artists and songwriters who want to learn how to write their own string arrangements — and have them recorded by a string quartet from our ensemble, Nordic Film Strings.

This is a three-part course over three weeks, with plenty of time between sessions to work independently, receive guidance along the way, and develop your arrangement step by step.

Who is this course for?

This course is for you if you are:

  • An artist, songwriter, or composer

  • Working with your own music and looking to expand your musical expression

  • Curious about string instruments and arranging

  • Comfortable with basic musical understanding (notation, chords, or working in a DAW)

You don’t need to be an expert in notation or orchestration — this course guides you from initial idea to a finished result.

How the course is structured

Day 1

Arranging and instrumental knowledge

  • Basic instrument knowledge (violin, viola, cello)

  • What string instruments can — and cannot — do

  • Tone, register, articulation, and expression

  • Common pitfalls in string arranging

  • Practical examples and guided listening

You’ll leave with practical tools and methods, and a clear starting point for your own arrangement.

Day 2

Group instruction and individual mentoring

On this day, we work hands-on with the participants’ own arrangements:

  • Group review and discussion

  • Individual feedback

  • Suggestions for improvements, simplifications, and tone choices

  • Discussion of notation, voice leading, and balance

  • Tips for arranging for efficient recording

The goal is for your arrangement to be ready for recording.

Day 3

Studio Recording

The final day takes place in the recording studio:

  • A professional string quartet records the participants’ arrangements — 30 minutes per arrangement

  • Hear your music brought to life by live musicians

  • Focus on ensemble playing, tone, and musicality

This is both educational, inspiring, and highly motivating.
